Medway Plantation

I have pointed out Medway Plantation before.  For all you history and preservation lovers, a wonderful article in Christies Great Estates came out, giving some of the history of the plantation and why it is such a magnificent place.  The land along the Back River, which flows into the Cooper River was settled in the 1680’s by Dutch colonists who used the estate as a rice plantation, for brick production, a hunting retreat, and a nature preserve.  The main house, rebuilt in 1704 after a fire, has six bedrooms and five bathrooms along with a beautiful dining room and a living room with appoximately 10 foot ceilings.  There are three staff houses, four guest buildings, a carriage house and 12 stall horse stable, a greenhouse, a lodge facing one of the 13 lakes, both indoor and outdoor pools and a boat landing.  The plantation has had many owners of the years including Gertrude Legendres who purchased Medway Plantation with her husband in 1929.  Under her direction a conservation easement has been placed to help protect the abundant wildlife and wetlands for traditional land use and conservation for future generations.  This plantation has been meticulously cared for and is awaiting a new owner.  Read the article and fall in love with this plantation; it is unique.
